queenlua: L'Arachel smiling. (L'Arachel: Happy)
Life has been A Lot for me this entire month, but, that's a topic for a different post. Only good things in this post, my friends.

1) Today I made an extremely tasty chili and now I get to eat it all week, all praise be to this boilermaker chili recipe

2) This weekend I learned that “hiring a falconer” is a thing you can do for your wedding, and immediately proceeded to do so, because hell yeah.

3) I published two new fics!

Shrike, No Chaser: Ace Attorney, Klavier/Apollo fluff, ~2.5k words. Basically, some people enabled me one time by being like "hey what if Ace Attorney but they're all birdwatchers" and this is the result. "Wow, Lua, it sounds like you've been thinking about this a lot—" my headcanon doc for this AU is extensive. Expect many more fics where this came from, lol.

and

Mountains Made of Steam: Fire Emblem 9/10, Reyson being a weird tetchy avoidant mope, also there's Rafiel and Nailah, ~7.5k words. This was my Nagamas exchange gift for [personal profile] lavendre, hi lavendre :P It includes an AWFUL DINNER PARTY so my writing goals were basically accomplished.

Hope I can be more chatty on here shortly. In the meantime, if anyone's having as rough of a January as I've had: remember, the Chinese New Year is coming up! you can just treat January as a free space! you get a fresh start in a mere one week, it's fine—

I was nostalgically digging around in some old folders tonight*, and I found a draft of the Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn fic I was using to advance my bizarre Micaiah/Leonardo agenda, e.g. "Edward dies then Sothe dies."

* I also found a short story I wrote when I was, like, 13. It is titled "Chasing the Phoenix" and it features a kickass chick named Keri with her pet hawk, and they are on a team of SKY PIRATES. They get way lucky and sight a PHOENIX, and phoenixes are literally made of rubies in this universe, so of course they wanna shoot it down and loot it. But then at the last minute, the hawk gets nervous and sad, and snaps his jesses, and flies down to try and warn the phoenix, and then both the hawk AND the phoenix die, and Keri is way bummed out, the end. so yeah I'm going to write the same shit over and over until I die apparently lmao

I last poked at this draft in, uh, 2015? While I was fond of it at the time, I no longer have any intention of turning it into a real fic. But I'm sharing the (incomplete, messy, not-great) draft here for posterity/historical interest, mainly because the MELODRAMA of the opening scene made me chuckle. Apparently my tastes changed in the past five years, who knew :P (And like, yeah, maybe that's the reason I didn't finish this one, who knows!)

During the march toward the Tower of Guidance, Micaiah contemplates the future: her own, Sothe's, and Daein's.

Naesala isn't helping.

~14k words.

Hey, remember this old thing?

So I'm definitely never gonna finish that fic—in fact, i'd kinda forgotten about it until someone reminded me a while ago—so, here, have the scraps of Where I Was Going With This, I Think, If Memory Serves.

(speaking of which, I was digging up my old drafts and—holy shit, when did dropbox change their UI to something made of total garbage? who let them do that? also shouldn't they have gone public by now)

(also note that the writing quality is no longer something I'm proud of at all; this is just a "if you find it amusing for posterity" thing rather than "you should treat this as Actual Creative Output" thing, or whatever :P)

Hey my exchange fic got done; let's see if I'll hate myself for it in the morning.

But before that time comes, here, have some random notebook scans from when I was writing the fic.

These notes are from pretty early on, when I knew I wanted to write Rafiel and Naesala and a swamp but I didn't know much else. I was just kicking around ideas, but I was surprised how many of these made it into the fic after I'd finished going down some dead ends first.

It should probably bother me that I end up drawing Lost comparisons as often as I do when I'm outlining fic, both of the fan and original varieties. That show was excellent excellent at characterization and god-awful at plot. Whups.

Also I'm almost at the end of this notebook and I don't know of a Japanese bookstore near me that sells more these particular notebooks D: I tried ordering some online at the beginning of last semester, but turns out navigating Japanese retail websites is pretty damn complicated even if you do have a semi-fluent Japanese speaker sitting beside you while you do it. I should've bought more of them while I was in Seattle ugh.

Zihark shoots Ricardo another glance over his shoulder, and Ricardo knows for sure in that moment that Zihark's no noble, because no noble would ever look at him that way—wary, cautious, threatened. Pre-FE9 Daein.

Here at FFN.

I also wrote some excuses, er, I mean, notes. Spoilers for the fic and such. )

I love looking at artists' sketchbooks and works-in-progress — there's just something so fun about seeing the lines and shapes in a rough sketch, or watching how a project progresses and changes as it gets closer to completion.

I really love looking at the writers' equivalent, too — drafts, outlines, notes, and so on — but for whatever reason, writers don't really share such things nearly as readily as artists do.

Anyway, I thought I'd share some bits from my notebook, written while I was planning "Dog in the Vineyard," for anyone who's similarly interested in such things.

Spoilers for aforementioned fic, obviously. Also, images ahoy! )

I was looking through some of my old stories that I have lying around on my computer, and I found this little snippet, written in February of 2007:

 *          *          *          *          *

“Soren?”

The figure froze, bridle in hand, just as moonlight washed across his face.  It was Soren — pale Soren, visibly shivering, though the night was warm.

“Soren, what are you doing?”

“What do you think?” he hissed.

“It looks like you’re leaving.”

“Hmph.”  Scowling, Soren jerked at the saddle’s girth.  __(fill this in later)__.  "Ike, I can’t stay here.  There’s rumors spreading through the company — there’s discontent — hadn’t you noticed?"

*          *          *          *          *

...I literally have zero recollection of writing this.  I am, however, greatly amused that it exists.  I could've sworn that Remnants of Restoration was my first time writing Fire Emblem fanfiction ever, but evidently I've been wanting to write Soren for a very, very long time.

Took long enough. >__>  Finals were brutal, and this chapter ended up being pretty long.  But yay, it's done now, exciting times
