It’s been a long time since we plucked my magic twanger, I know.

No, I have not forgotten how to blog.  I just haven’t had the time, or the energy.  Too much else to do, too many projects, too many deadlines, and I was behind on everything.   Too much death as well; we lost some close friends during the last few months, along with artists, writers, and other celebrities whose work meant a lot to us, even if we did not know them personally.  I wanted to talk about all of that.

Oh, and politics… I have refrained from making any comment on the things going down in the real world this last year, but that does not mean I have nothing to say.

Had I found time back in the fall, I might have made some football posts too, as I have in past years, but given the seasons the Jets and the Giants had, it was just as well I didn’t.   I am not that masochistic.

I’ve been on the road a lot as well, more than I’ve been for the past several years; with A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS set to debut in January there was a lot of promotion to do.   There was worldcon in Seattle, Bubonicon in Albuquerque, the New York City Comicon, two weeks in the United Kingdom to speak at Oxford, visit my British publishers in London, check out Stratford-upon-Avon, and return to Belfast where Ira, Peter, Dexter, and the rest of their merry company were filming the second season of Dunk and Egg, based on my novella “The Sworn Sword.”   Most recently, I was in Berlin for the world premiere  HBO’s adaptation of “The Hedge Knight,” the first season of A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS.

The last time I visited Germany was a quarter century ago… it came as a real shock when I realized that, it did not seem nearly so long.   The years do go by quickly.

I hoped to blog about all of this… but there was just so much, and every day it seemed there was more.   I prefer not to lug a computer along with me when I travel.  (I tried it, decades ago, and it never worked).   I do have a staff of loyal minions who take care of my Not A Blog for me when I cannot, and they filled in for me a bit, at the start at least.  The blog posts that went up on November 10, December 12, and December 15, which you’ll find below, were all Minion Posts.  The last one I posted myself was “Dunk & Egg Take the Big Apple,” which went up on October 7, after I got home from the NYC Comicon, before travel, deadlines, deaths, and the like left me overwhelmed.

I am back at home in Santa Fe at last, I am pleased to say, settling back in at my computer in the Land of Enhantment.  Trying to cover everything that’s happened since October in one gulp would require a blog post as long as one of my novels, I fear, so I am not going to do that.  I do want to catch up some, however, so I  instead I hope to do a series of short mini-posts here, to touch on matters both large and small… though not in the detail I might have had I not fallen so far behind.   We’ll see how that goes.   Watch this space.   (I expect the posts to be all over the place.   So much to cover).

It has been an exciting half year.  “Interesting times,” as the infamous proverb says.

But it’s good to be home.

Maybe this will fix me

All my free time right now is just couch-rotting and HOUSING, so even my calls with my dad are just 10-minute "You got nothing? I got nothing too" check-ins. Last weekend, I thought I found The Place (after having broken my own heart with not being able to afford my first-love unit); then their realtor broke the news that not only did the building not allow dogs, but they'd accidentally listed it for $30K under the real asking price, which was: a shock!!! After sulking for a few days, because it really would have been EVERYTHING, location-wise, it was back in the saddle.

Today, we went to three different places, and the last one was The One. I'd fallen in love with the listing, but seeing it in person just felt so so so so right. Now, of course, there are multiple offers, and my realtor and I are trying to put together a good pitch but I'm going to be paying more than I hoped I would, BUT. Realtor thinks we'll get it, and I would like to know where I'm living in April. It's smaller than my current place but laid out really, really well. The light is astonishing, the kitchen is fantastic AND there's an excellent back porch. I want it to work out real bad!! The wise thing would be to Start Purging Now, but I do feel, on a larger level, that I've been in ADHD waiting mode for my whole life since December. That is hard to dig out of at the best of times.

Other news is sparse. My arm is doing really well in OT; physical therapists are just the nicest people in the whole world, and I'm also dead set on getting myself a magnetic dart board once I'm in the new place. Can This Love Be Translated? is so much better than it should be — a completely delightful love triangle between two people who don't speak each other's language and their interpreter. It is honestly also a lot like watching my character bleed fic come to life, and I'm dying (positive!!!) over that a lot.

Even though we're doing a ton of election/primary coverage, I really really love my job and my coworkers. I just love them. What a good crew. That's a huge relief.

I am so excited about what my life is going to be once I get the psychic weight of this condo eventuality in order. I keep thinking about the spaces I want to have in my home and what they'll enable, and I want to invite people over for parties all the freaking time. We'll get there! It'll happen! I just wish I knew what it will look like. Waiting, especially for things that are ultimately out of your control: It's terrible!

I’m following The Summer Hikaru Died as the manga is released in English, and I’d heard good things about the anime but I hadn’t intended to watch it because I generally feel that anime adaptations won’t give me anything I don’t get out of the manga. I only changed my mind after I watched the AMV IMPOSTEЯ (by Bauzi) courtesy of [personal profile] katranat’s 2025 reclist. Which I guess was visually striking enough to convince me otherwise!

So I watched the anime over my summer break and I enjoyed it a lot! I like the manga but the anime definitely made me feel more obsessive – although that could be in part the more compressed experience and I should try rereading the manga straight through. Hikaru is an endearing cosmic horror, but Yoshiki is my fave. I just want that boy to be happy!! So much angst but in a very understandable way.

There were four AMVs for it in Festivids this year. I particularly enjoyed [personal profile] winterevanesce’s MONSTER! and [personal profile] pi’s TMI

The Rain, and Things Built

It poured with rain this morning. I hoped that it might be raining less in Pembroke, so I took Theo there for a walk. But it was not raining less. It was not raining so hard that the Commons were flooded, as has happened a few times this winter, though I did end up rather cautiously driving through a giant puddle that ran right across the road.

Everyone else was driving through it and there was no easy way to wimp out by the time I saw it with traffic behind me, so I just aimed at the middle and hoped. And made it!

Theo and I went for a very short walk and soon agreed that it was too wet for walking. We went to a cafe instead.Dog, castle, and mirror dinghy )

2/7/2026 César Chavez Park

There's been a White-winged Scoter hanging out with a flock of Surf Scoters off César Chavez. U got a look at it yesterday so I decided to go down today. But while I followed several flotillas of Scoters I don't think I found it. One apparently good candidate seemed to have a flash of white on their wing when they flew off, but they landed too far out for me to keep watching. I had a good time, though. This Winter there are two Burrowing Owls along the NE edge of the park, and while I could not find the one I saw last time, amongst the rocks, a second bird was sitting at the mouth of their burrow in plain sight. East to see and easy to point out to passersby hoping to see an owl. The real fun for me, though was just a little further on, when I saw a bird I did not immediately recognize sitting on a rock. They vocalized briefly and bobbed up and down a little, but mostly assumed a sun bathing stance in a slight hollow. After a false start I tried the wrens, and yes, a Rock Wren in César Chavez Park. Turns out this is the second Winter one has been here, likely the same bird. It's always interesting when this happens. The list: )

U had alerted me to singing Savannah Sparrows, and I heard two, one of whom was singing from the top of a bright red hydrant. Very effective.

Title: Finding Yourself in a New World – Chapter 6: Her Own Personal Code
Day/Prompt: Day 6 / Her Own Personal Code
Fandom: Warrior Nun (TV)
Character/Pairing: Yasmine, Camila, Ava, Mary, Shannon
Rating/Warning(s): T / None
Word Count: 4166
Summary: Despite Yasmine's fears about breaking the law, once she gets to know the workers on Kasar and sees how they are treated, she throws herself into helping them without regard for the risk. Yasmine even takes on an extra mission when she learns about an injustice that she can correct.
Author's Notes: So, life attacked me (or rather, the vibes were not right, they were right for watching a lot of shows but not writing, lol), meaning I have now broken my 401 day streak of posting one fic or chapter every single day. Honestly, I'm kind of relieved about it. But I am determined to finish this fic for Halfamoon, I just might be a bit late with some of the prompts.
