I've done a lot of Cormag thinking for one of my ongoing fics, and I'm definitely with you. I guess I tend to roll with it being him actually not being sure where he stands? On the one hand, he owes his current life to Vigarde. Were he not serving Grado, he'd still be an aimless farm kid somewhere in southern Grado, after all. At the same time, it's almost as if he's not sure whether his service was to Grado as a country, or to Vigarde himself. He has no personal attachment to Lyon (unlike say, Knoll or Natasha) or to anything that's left in Grado, so then the question is, does he swear off all notions of loyalty before he can be betrayed again? Or does he try to follow the ideals he held before despite the people backing them falling by the wayside?
Given that his ending with Tana eventually has him serve Frelia, if I'm remembering correctly, my feeling is that he comes to terms with the fact that he wants to fight for someone, rather than the abstract ideals of country and patriotism. Without that ending, I figure his motivation would be continuing in what his previous liege would have wanted. I think it's less a matter of servitude and more just wanting to feel strongly enough about a person to fight for their sake, in whatever sense you want to take that.
