Hmm, yeah. I always got the impression that Shinon maybe had some debt to Greil that also made him emotionally attached. He's clearly been with the company a long time, long enough to give him an entitlement complex towards it. And even after he grudgingly half-acknowledges Ike's right to leadership, he takes massive issue with the fact that Ike still uses Greil's name for the company.

So yeah, I can definitely see a mentor type of relationship between Shinon and Greil! Also agree with you on Shinon's hostility to Ike being very much based on jealousy. Interesting point about Shinon's racism as well...
