(no idea wrt what maupassant story has a snake in it! the necklace is the one that's like "a couple loses a pearl necklace they borrowed from a friend; the couple works really hard to make money to buy an equivalent-value pearl necklace bc omg they can't believe they LOST something so IMPORTANT and EXPENSIVE; in the end the friend is like 'oh lol that was costume jewelery, it was really cheap, oh fuck i hope you didn't work too hard to replace this,'" something something class commentary but also BRUTAL twist lol.)
