re: making Xaden too nice too early on: yeah, like, it's quite early in the book when we get that bit where Xaden's just offering helpful survival advice to the other rebellion-leader-kids, right? it would be tropey & familiar to have Violet overhear something she THINKS is bad & hate him even more on the basis of that, only to realize later she was mistaken, but... uh... i mean that's a trope that works fine, and turning it into "actually he's just being nice the whole time :) no misunderstandings here" doesn't introduce any interesting tension or any aspect of his character to really chew on lmao
i do appreciate the need to read Cool Dragon Stuff, tho; def read some pern novels in my youth. so definitely get the appeal of that part of it all~
