I never really thought about how digital native scores can feel like they were not meant to be performed by human hands, but that makes perfect sense. I'm glad you're having fun with it! Back when I was playing drums there was a battle track I tried to get down but it's been so long I don't remember what it was anymore.
I say see if there's a teacher up for providing a quick brush up! It's still a gig for them and assuming the teacher is good I be it would a helpful experience.
