i'm actually not a Star Wars person overall & dislike most pulp-y paperback franchise books... but i have a HUGE fondness for Revenge of the Sith in particular, so i checked out the novelization from the library after watching the movie because i wanted more, and, Matthew Stover is a fucking banger author it turns out? (i proceeded to read more of his other stuff thereafter haha) if everyone wrote pulp paperback franchise books that way i'd have a lot more fun with them? guy just kind of nails everything it feels like pulpy books should be doing. there's an amazing overwrought extended metaphor about Anakin's fall into the dark side that is still vivid in my mind after all these years (dark dragon orbiting a distant dying star); the battle sequences and banter are FUN; and it really fills in a lot of the emotional texture that Anakin's relationships lacked in the movie, in a way that makes the story land arguably more satisfyingly. so i guess i don't have an opinion on Star Wars in general but MATTHEW STOVER KNOWS WHAT'S UP
