I was thinking about COVID as I read that. When I was in high school, only the teachers got wine at Mass (I didn't go up for communion, first because I hadn't done confirmation and second because by sophomore year I was a filthy pagan) and I still remember thinking "ew, too many people touched that cup, even if they wipe the lip each time."
