oooooh iiiiiinteresting.... Roper very lightly touches on that sort of thing, but the lens/thesis of her book is pretty narrowly focused on trying to unpack Luther-as-a-person (she basically says upfront "look, there are good reasons to be skeptical of Great Men Of History-type bios, and also it's dangerous to speculate too much about the motives/psychology/etc of people so far in the past... but on the other hand, we probably know more about Luther than anyone else in his century, we have his complete collected works and it's 120 volumes including a ton of written correspondence and records of dinner table conversations, so I feel like it's pretty valid to try and say something about Luther In Particular" hahaha), so it doesn't go into too much depth on that front!

but Roper's book got me super-interested in this era of history so the recommendations are VERY MUCH appreciated; very likely i'll be picking one of those up next :D
