Very interesting--and actually, I found the comments pretty interesting too, because I had no idea that there were countries where the Catholic laity were regularly offered both the bread and wine! In my own experience attending Catholic mass in a few European countries (I used to travel widely a few decades ago), the laity being offered the chalice was pretty rare, in some countries almost unheard of.
I've actually only experienced it once myself, in Scotland, and I found it weird and new-fangled, almost heretical :D I realize now, reading your post years later, that I was completely wrong! (Well, I guess it is new-fangled relative to the middle ages :D)
