Consuelo is an absolutely wild ride and I enjoyed the experience of reading it (and its sequel) with almost no idea of what I was getting into. I was totally not expecting the introductory section in Venice to be followed by a Gothic stay at a castle in Bohemia, where our protagonist takes a short-term position as a lady's companion, and I was certainly not expecting the young lady in need of companionship to provide an extensive infodump on the history of the Hussites by way of introduction to the local situation!
I don't really know other people who have read it -- Sand's more realistic books have held up better in literary reputation, and it hasn't been translated into English since the 19th century (I read it in French, so I don't know how the English translations are). (And possibly George Sand suffers because people confuse her with George Eliot, who is a much better writer from a literary standpoint but doesn't give the same serialized crackfic experience.)
