In Leanne's case, she was "protected by the forest." So evidently the forest itself is classist too. The only royals who really escaped the Massacre were Lorazieh and Reyson, and Lorazieh hardly escaped unscathed.
Also, re: my idea, I was confused for a good long moment until I scrolled down to #5, and I was like "oooh, THAT idea." I'd almost forgotten the elegant explanation of the bird tribes that comes off of that. :P
... I should give it its own post someday. And the dragon war thing too.
As for Rafiel being spirited away, I suspect this may have been more palatable as a ~random mystery of the world~ to Japan.
