(yeah, there's both the aspect of, "originally 'magical realism' referred to the genre emerging from a specific set of 20th-century postcolonial conditions, especially in e.g. Latin America," in which case you could sort of argue that Sharks belongs to that since, it is indeed about postcolonialism, among other things! but don't know enough about the connections there to really say for sure... and then there's the aspect of, "well, if the magic bits *are* treated as remarkable and surprising by the characters in-universe, it's not really magical realism, because magical realist novels are more about really weird shit being treated as totally ordinary in-universe, but if the magic bits aren't really the primary driver of the plot then it doesn't feel quite right to call it 'fantasy' either..." genre labels! tricky beasts :P)
