It's been a couple years since I read this but I remember having much the same reaction, like, damn it covers a lot of ground, very intelligently, and both the culture clash and the reverse culture clash when Ifemelu goes back to Nigeria, like you said, were really potently evoked. It was something I'd never considered, given I don't travel and, the one time I did go away for four years, came back completely unchanged :P
But yeah it did feel less like a narrative and more like... a bunch of stuff happening. I was interested in a lot of the individual incidents and sort of mini-arcs but I cannot recall much of a throughline beyond "Ifemelu goes places, strikes up various relationships with various people; sharp observations are made"
