It was racist, and rapey (including on-screen rape and then Making Up With Your Rapist), and Extremely Colonialist, and super 1950s Gender Is Happening, and if I hadn't been reading it for book club I would have ollied out quite early on. :/ (I mean also I hated literally every character in the book except for two and was actively rooting for a meteor impact by page 5, so that happened.) And I mean, also the problem of Exactly One Female Character and she got loaded down with seventy-five problematic pieces of shit because she had to carry ALL the shitty weight.
I just remember reading it and being like, this guy sure can construct some astounding sentences but put the whole man in the fire.
