I think the fantasy optimism depends a lot on which fantasy you're reading! I've been neck-deep in Michelle Sagara's Chronicles of Elantra recently and they're really interesting. Mysteries, popcorn-like reading in that they're very quick to read, but hard in that there's a lot to think about, and it's a rough and imperfect world where nevertheless the characters are trying to do the right thing, and I'm here for it. I'm not here for the GRRM grimdark, but there are some amazing bits of fantasy I'm reading that are more optimistic. (and by contrast the last SF I read was Vonnegut and I hated it, I wanted to set everything on fire. Fuck.)
