yeah, i totally agree with all this. classrooms definitely encourage technique > style. two wildly different environments, for sure. i feel like you also see more successful people in online spaces though -- that urge to get as good or cool as x is everywhere.
it bums me out to see artists that feel that way though, because feeling like you're lagging behind because you don't meet x criteria is terrible and completely untrue! i guess there is a sense of security to be found in having a style (feeling like you're part of a community, that favoritism), but it's crazy seeing artists drag themselves when they feel like if they haven't developed a style, or a "signature," they've failed in some massive way. that mindset seems so poisonous tbh, though i suppose some could use it as a motivator to really get good at what they want to be seen/known for? art making, man.
