re: the second game particularly - I utterly loathe how twitter/tumblr tends to forget that their determined 'queer experience' isn't.... the only one that exists out there (hello, log cabin republicans), and it's quite amusing to see how utterly hostile they can get when reminded of the fact. (ah so it's hatred of the other side that binds you more than a shared experience? OK then.) (that was perhaps a tasteless blow, ymmv.)
Very agreed with you about Hatoful Boyfriend vs DDLC. Subversive creepypastas tends to thrive when it *actually* throws you for a loop and had been playing it straight far longer. (Majora's Mask "Ben Drowned" - while overdone and technically not a "game" - feels like another good example of this. You actually did get a whole legit game out of it, after all.)
( Here's an old indie game rec for you: OFF. Still a little sparse plot-wise, but I was utterly entranced at the low-key genuine creepiness that built itself up through the various chapters over time. The monsters aren't something I'd forget in a long while either.)
