No advice, but commiseration. When my stepmother came onto the scene, she banned conditioner and detangler using similar terms as your mom, from the sound of it. And then decided I "didn't deserve" to have long hair and had it all hacked off. So, it's grown back and I am damned if I'll cut it short again while she draws breath, but turns out spite alone does nothing for split ends and I am completely ignorant about the alternatives. If I find some life changing hack for maintaining longish hair I'll share, otherwise I'll keep looking like a morally superior haystack.
