I believe it was after Gilbert Gottfried got in hot water for a tasteless joke after the tsunami that hit Japan a few years back that I saw some really good essays on the historical value of comedy in a time of tragedy and a rebuttal in particular that any time was "too soon". One of them was focused on comedy in the Jewish community specifically and went all the way back to these gangs of roving comedians whose point was to, well, upset people for philosophical purposes. Wish I still had the link to that. Not that it made Gottfried's jokes funny, but I think about that whenever someone is going "OMG you can't even joke about this!!!"
Humans joke about everything. Always have. And sometimes it's weaponized. "Ghetto humor" and "gallows humor" both carry a pretty specific connotation, you know? They COME from somewhere that sure isn't ha-ha funny. Sometimes humor, even bad, dark, slashing, poisonous humor, is the only thing you've got.
