Admittedly I was a little less excited when the reviewer started quoting horror B-film type wacky ideas like "What if God was disguised as a Communist dictator and was out to conquer the world and eat us all?" but I am still a believer in salvation spray cans and alternate post-WWII Souvenirs.
As for substances and writing, I'm of the opinion that it's similar to the 2 AM effect, which allow you to let go and stop giving a fuck and turn off your inner editor -- an effect that could either leave you with GENIUS or "what the fuck did I write last night and why did I think it would be a good idea".
Also, Harold Bloom lost all credibility in my eyes when he snarked about ~The School of Resentment~ and then proceeded to approve of A Tale of Two Cities. For aesthetic reasons, obviously. Like forced symbolism and a cohesive plot with an antagonist at the cost of sincerity regarding the human condition. That's just so aesthetically beautiful man.
