the astronomy club sounds really fab from what you say about it :)
i'm planning to get more involved with the local audubon chapter next year and maybe that'll give me something similar.
ETA: actually now that i'm thinking about it, i just remembered another community like this. one of my cousins is in, like, this running club in one of the carolinas, and it's kind of incredible the camaraderie the group has. they run every weekend and grab coffee afterwards, but besides that nothing much unites them—some run casually, some are long-distance, some are marathoners, the members range from doctors to high school coaches to minimally-employed bums to whatever else, age twenty up to sixties—but they're all super-warm towards each other. and they do simple-yet-important shit for each other, like giving each other rides to the airport or helping out with last-minute emergency babysitting or whatever. i met a bunch of them when a lot of them were in boston for the marathon, and they were so kind & polite & energetic & such that i was just super-glad my cousin had a group like them.
i'll have to ponder this more, because that group was doing something Super Right.
