Unrelatedly, thoughts on positions of power with little money, courtesy of Ammie-in-bed:

• Prominent respected journalists.
• Certain offices of government. E.g. the presidency formally has a relatively slow salary given the danger and workload. The part where you get rich as president is technically the result of the power you hold, not the reason you have it.
• People with direct access to anything sufficiently dangerous, e.g. smallpox. This includes some low-salary positions like janitors. The catch is that this form of power is not very versatile. Corollary: Anyone who decides their life is forfeit and has access to the internet.
• Secretaries of important people, who have a great deal of power over the information that does and doesn't reach them, and can smoothen or hinder their activities. Pay is typically much less than that of their boss.
