heh. funny you mention the linguistics angle; i very distinctly remember a night in college where i was at some party, and some dude started making fun of his roommate, who was from west virginia, and did a really insulting/overdone caricature of a rural appalachian accent while he was doing this. when i was like "dude back the fuck off" and he just seemed totally clueless why anyone would find this dickish and ugh
