Oh yeah, and about the thesis -- I'm not willing to compare the two because
while I grew up amongst the poor my family was not poor (and actually
switched schools on me once because I was ~making bad friends~) but I do
feel like the issues of poor white America are underappreciated in current
academia. Several times in linguistics class I would try to raise an
example using rural working-class white people and their speech... and
everyone would just look kind of blankly at me and I'd be like "another
example is AAVE" (which I didn't want to use because EVERYONE USES THAT
EXAMPLE and usually the phenomenon exists well outside of it!) and everyone
would be like "oh yes, that is very true."
