Habit Tracking: Week 06 (February 01 - February 07)

This weird creature was a sticker from Abi Stevens Art. I picked it this week for the vibes. I still feel kind of weird and off, like a bizarre and monstrous serpent bird, so that seemed appropriate.

This week was the final stretch of recovery and my return to work. While I still feel like it wasn't quite enough time, I have been feeling far better than I did the previous week. I did have a few reasonably productive days at home, where I started to get caught up on some of what I'd missed. The week itself was difficult, though. The news on Wednesday about my friend Mark passing was... heartbreaking. I still just don't feel like he can be gone.

Goals for the week:

  • I did finally catch up on DW
  • I wrote up my January book reviews
  • I finished reading We're Here
  • I took more walks
  • I returned to work
  • I did not work on my reading page
  • I did my [community profile] getyourwordsout check in: 12542 words
  • I did my tracker grids for the next month
  • We paid rent
  • I started reading Hell Bent

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 1.5/7 - I returned for a half day on Friday, resuming my regular schedule on Saturday
  • Household Maintenance - 5/7
  • Physical Activity - 7/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 0/7
  • Non-fiction Writing - 6/7 - three days of over 500 words, three days of over 1000
  • Meta Work - 4/7
  • Personal Writing - 6/7
  • Other Creative Things - 0/7
  • Reading - 6/7 - I finished reading We're Here and started Hell Bent, plus read a small bit of my ebook side-read; Alex and I finished The Sun Dog and started The Luminous Dead
  • Attention to Media - 7/7 - Sunday had various background stuff, watched some reviews later; Monday had youtube in the background, then later watched agility qualifiers for the Westminster dog show; Tuesday Alex and I went to see Iron Lung (enjoyed it!) and later watched more dog show stuff; Wednesday watched more dog show stuff and some video game videos; Thursday was more game videos and later some of the Olympic snowboard qualifiers; Friday watched a paranormal video, a review, and some game videos; Saturday had news in the background.
  • Video Games - 0/7
  • Social Interaction - 5/7

Total words written: 8105, all non-fiction; some about the stresses of paperwork, some about my friend's passing, some on book reviews

The mood swings are gone now, and I have been trying to figure out finance stuff with getting my volunteer massage clinic hours done in time for getting work and saving up money for moving in June (dear gods I hope so anyway).

The house was invaded yesterday by other family members for Superb Owl Sunday. There was a lot of food making and then I retreated upstairs during the sportsball tournament, as I am not much for team sports. Today I went in for Jury duty, waited around for an hour and was dismissed.

Wound care exposing a pregnancy.

Would hospital care after minor dog attack injuries expose a first trimester pregnancy?

Details:
I have a story I'm currently working on set in a modern type world, and a plot point where one of the two main characters is attacked by a pack of street dogs and gets some minor scratch and bite injuries. I'm thinking just a few stitches at most. I can guess they'll need "just in case" antibiotics and rabies shots because of the bites, but would common care involve any tests that would expose an early pregnancy?

Goals:
I'm trying to keep the pregnancy a surprise for the other main character later in the story, so a "some hospitals would do these tests but some wouldn't" could be ruled that this time it wasn't done. But if it's very common to do certain blood or other tests that would easily reveal a pregnancy, that's a problem. And having the other main character who's acting as their savior/caregiver in this scenario decide not to get them treatment wouldn't be in character or suit his arc in the story, even with minor wounds that in theory could be treated at home.

Do I need to change details of the attack, or depict this medical team as negligent? Or is the stealth of this pregnancy safe?

Day 9: Fic - Stargate SG-1 - Sam Carter

First character who came to my mind for "The Scholar" prompt was Sam Carter who's saved her team plenty of times with her scientific knowledge. She's cool and competent at what she does!

Title: Getting back to the basics
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Character: Sam Carter (plus Cassie is briefly here too)
Rating: G
Length: 100 words
Summary: Sam's favorite part of her job is the science
Link: here on ao3 or you can read it under the cut below

(bonus silly author's note)
In my head, there was backstory about how Cassie asked Sam for homework help because Janet was busy treating SG-3 who came back from offworld with a mysterious blue rash.

But obviously I could not fit that in the drabble 😂

REC - Day 9 - Star Trek AOS - Uhura/T'Pring

Title + link: The Love Connection
Author: ForFucksSakeJim
Prompt: Day 9 - The Scholar
Fandom: Star Trek: Alternate Original Series
Characters/Pairing: T'Pring/Nyota Uhura
Length:  10,381
Rating:  Teen
Warnings: None
Summary:  While transporting a group of Vulcans to their new homeworld, Uhura meets T’Pring, a talented linguist whose gravitational pull she just can’t refuse.

Reccer's notes: This fic brings T'Pring and Nyota together due to their shared love of linguistics and T'Pring's appreciation for Nyota's perfect Vulcan pronunciation. They are both delightfully complex and fun characters here and the growth that develops from a love of language seemed to definitely fit the theme.

I wanted a Vietnamese coffee and I didn't want to go out to get it so I ordered in through Skip the Dishes, my old standby from lockdown. Skip has a peculiar web interface that lags when you try to login and then suddenly decides yeah ok we do know you after all. I think they want you to use their even buggier app which no I won't. But this time they were giving my address as 518 for some reason, so I corrected that to 543 and ordered my chicken and vermicelli and coffee. Of course I really  wanted a banh mi after reading all those Dr. Siri books where he sits eating his banh mi by the side of the Mekong looking over at Thailand. But you know, bread, so no. And I watched on the map as the little car icon come up Christie and turned and I went to the door to wait for the guy, and the guy didn't come and my phone said Your order has been delivered! with a photo of an unfamiliar porch. So I text the guy, I'm here at 543 waiting, and he texts back that of course he left it at 518. Thus I had to go out anyway and yes, wrestle the walker through the snow berms again, because 518 is south of me and on the other side. This isn't the first time Skip has altered my address off its own bat-- they had me at 552 for the longest time-- so I think that's it for me and Skip. I like that they give you tracking on your order, which Uber doesn't-- Uber comes when it comes and doesn'teven knock-- but I can't be having with their webpage's dementia.

quick checking in!

Dreamwidth is absolutely broken for me right now and I have no idea why LOL, but I wanted to make a post because it's been over a month and also I missed out on doing [community profile] snowflake_challenge (which I am a bit sad about...) and ALSO there has been shit going down that pisses me off and if that could be the catalyst that gets me to blog again I would not complain.

2026 has been... something. In many ways!!! But I'm determined to keep on keeping on and to have a good time no matter what... I never did end up making that post looking back on 2025 or whatever it was I wanted to do, but maybe that's for the best in retrospect... I'd still kinda like to write down stuff I'd like to do over 2026 though. So maybe I'll try doing that once, huh... Dreamwidth fixes itself on my end... (If it's still broken tomorrow I'll try to figure that out, or something...)

In light of the ongoing attempts to Crack Down On Pornography I've also been contemplating posting some of that on here, especially stuff I'm not as inclined to share elsewhere right now lawl. So there might be some of that in the future? If there is, rest assured the "worst" of it will be posted under cuts with warnings and probably friends only. So there is that o7

Anyway I picked the worst time to make a post because it's almost 2am and I need to SLEEP but here's a further quick rundown...

1) I'm still so deep in the Corbeau/L mines you guys. Check out the chibi I drew for my [personal profile] candyheartsex letter... I wanted to share it here a month ago and then I never ended up doing it so here it is now!!!

2) THE PROTOMEN ACT III CAME OUT AND I'M STILL FREAKING OUT ABOUT IT INTERNALLYYYYYYYY literally listening to it right now lol. I ordered a physical album but it's going to be delivered to a friend in the US so I won't get it until the summer... Also I was so excited to get it I didn't think to check the rest of the store and now I'm sad I didn't get the The Good Doctor Part 2 poster considering it literally features my ship </3 Maybe I'll try to get it later... But in the meantime you should look at it because it rules...

3) It's [tumblr.com profile] perfworldweek right now!!! Actually saying this made me realize I forgot to advertize it starting on [community profile] fandomcalendar today OOP. Maybe this is what I should do before going to bed actually lmao.

Okay this was chaotic as hell and I have no idea what it's going to look like considering how fucked up this is on my end but hopefully it's not too bad ??? I'll see you later o7 wait before I go you should check out [community profile] pkmnkinkmeme if you haven't seen it yet... Okay now I'm leaving au revoir o7

Strugglebus

My alarm went off two hours earlier than usual today. I'd had the kind of bad sleep you do when you know you'll need to get up early: it took me longer to fall asleep in the first place and I woke up repeatedly, convinced at one point that I'd definitely slept too late until I looked at the clock and saw it was 4:30am.

I was starting work early so I could be interviewed for BBC Radio Leeds. It went really well, thanks I think to a journalist I'd spoken to a couple weeks ago. I had a really nice conversation. And then a quiet morning with a big cup of coffee while I gently got myself up to dealing with meetings and emails.

My mood and mental state have been low all weekend, and I'm really struggling with sleep again. And eating.

Oddly, in a total inverse of the past...oh, year or more, it seemed like I was feeling least bad during work hours. Walking Teddy now kinda marks the end of my work day, and it's a really nice little ritual that sometimes gives me time to file away the work day and think about what's ahead. But today, I didn't feel the usual relief at finishing work, but more... overwhelmed maybe. Everything feels like so much at the moment: watching the effects I'm seeing around me from ICE, Gaza, the Epstein files, UK politics thanks to the by-election we're living amidst, politics in sports from the Olympics to Bad Bunny...

All my podcasts are being boring and/or not updating, they're all conspiring to make me actually read my book-club book even though i don't wanna -- it's The Day the World Came to Town, about the multiple airliners' worth of passengers that descended on a small Newfoundland town on 9/11 when the U.S. closed its air space. I'm still at the beginning and just stressed out hearing about people in Europe getting on these transatlantic flights, the normal day the air traffic controller thought he was going to have... The book is leaving me both agitated and bored at the same time somehow.

I screwed up a plan to get nice takeout as a treat tonight, I couldn't help do this week's Tesco order as had been the plan for this evening, and I could only sit through half of Sinners, my favorite movie from all of last year, before I had to go lie in the dark. But that was hours ago; I can't sleep.
