Sending one up for my Guardian Angel

I woke to zero no snow. It was due in at 2 AM. It starts instead exactly at 930 but friday is now a half day for me. I leave at noon. In those 2 1/2 hours it had snowed about 3-4 more inches. I can't see the road in town. Worse, I can't see it on the major highway but traffic is moving...until 1 1/2 miles from my place. Ahead of me I see two 18 wheelers skid, jack knife and bump into each other. I pump the brakes and naturally I'm not stopping. Worse, the 18 wheeler next to me also can't stop and he begins to jack knife. Luckily I DO stop without hitting anyone or skidding out. The 18 wheeler stops without taking me out.

No one behind me hits me. I'm like well a) glad I wasn't crammed and hopefully that stays that way b) I'm gonna be here forever c) I forgot my ereader. I call my parents to have something to do and then realize after dad says 'go grade something.' oh right I DID bring 6 folders of grading to do. that kept me busy for the next hour and 10 minutes. The truck drivers came back to be sure we were all okay. So no one was hurt. the big tow trucks come and the road is opened on one side and immediately the chucklefuck in the pick up behind me starts BLARING his horn at us. Dude, the cop is still in the road. When he says we can go we will.

I finished that vampire story about 800 words over. I might leave it that way because they said they'll read a little over and that's not that much.

Athletes on parade

Months ago I got rid of the cable connection for the TV. I have been doing OK with Netflix and a couple of other streaming services, plus watching Channel 2 live stream on the laptop, but it was getting to be Olympics time. I bought an indoor HDTV antenna and installed it all by myself. Now I can watch broadcast networks.
Two hours in to the delayed-to-primetime coverage of the opening ceremony NBC I am already irritated by their coverage but I knew what to expect. The ceremony organizers have done a clever thing for the parade of athletes. The primary division of sports is that indoor icy things are happening in Milan while outdoor snowy things are happening in Cortina, more than 200 miles away. The main ceremony is in an arena in Milan but they didn't haul the snow folks down for the ceremony - at each location the relevant athletes are marching (dancing, grooving) through Stargates (my thought, not what they are calling them). In Cortina they are walking down a street with people on either side like crowds watching a road race.
Sorry about the photographer's watermark/copyright thing. I couldn't find images from Cortina that didn't have it.

I like the Haitian uniforms the best and was sorry to learn earlier today that they were required to remove the portrait of Toussaint Louverture.

I like the Mongolian ones a lot too (see above). Many counties have nice ones.

Watching network TV means I am getting commercials. My favorite so far is one for Chevrolet, using the song from my childhood ("see the USA in your Chevrolet. America is asking you to call"). I sang along. It will not make me buy a new car.

2/6/2026 Valle Vista Staging Area

The three of us went out to Valle Vista today and had an even better day than I did three days ago. It was another beautiful morning, and we walked both Riche Loop and out to the south gate. I missed a few birds they saw mostly because the path all the way to the shoreline was just a little too uneven for me. One highlight was a beautiful Cooper's Hawk high in a tree in clear view making a vocalization I hadn't heard since a long ago Yolo Bypass trip with Denise. The other was when U found a Lincoln Sparrow, as she so often does.:) I got a good diagnostic view of it, which I frequently do not. The list: )

Unfortunately the Bald Eagles did not appear for U and Chris. OTOH, neither did the Northern Mockingbird.:)

Daily Happiness

1. It's the weekend! And I went in to the office this morning but was able to come home by mid afternoon, so that was nice.

2. We're having home made pizza for dinner again. Same Korean bbq flavor spam and roasted corn as last time, but this time I did not forget the edamame. In fact, I specifically put this on the dinner menu the night after a night when we were having edamame as a side dish with something else, so we'd already have some leftover that I could just add on top of the pizza!

3. It's warm, but it's still blanket weather for Chloe.

Slo-Mo Rewatch: Guardian episode 11, part 1

Zhao Yunlan sprawled on a couch, grinning at his phone. The background shows a purply sky with stars. Text reads "Slo-Mo Rewatch. Guardian - half an episode per week @ sid-guardian.dreamwidth.org."

Hi, and welcome back to the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch. Watch half an episode a week, at your leisure, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here are the previous weeks' rewatch posts.

Episode 11, up to 22:22

Summary
In the flashbacks, Sang Zan becomes despotic and nihilistic after Ge Lan's death. Eventually the villagers turns on him, and he laughs bitterly as the Awl activates and empillars him. In the present-day caves, Zhao Yunlan and the Envoy try to free Wang Zheng, and Zhu Jiu appears. Fighty McFight. The pillar is split and Sang Zan comes out to fight when the Envoy is pushed back. Zhu Jiu disintegrates Sang Zan's energy body. Zhao Yunlan shoots Zhu Jiu. The Envoy draws the Awl out of the pillar, and Zhu Jiu flees, thwarted. Wang Zheng kneels to the Envoy, begging him to reconstitute Sang Zan. Meanwhile, outside, Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng are fighting youchu. They go to find the others, and Zhao Yunlan introduces Sang Zan as the new SID archive manager. Back at the hotel, Zhao Yunlan finds Zhu Hong sleeping at the table. She seems disorientated and reacts strangely when Zhao Yunlan asks after Shen Wei. Shen Wei appears upstairs, smiling in apparent relief that Zhao Yunlan et al are back. After a moment's hesitation, Zhao Yunlan smiles back. The SID and the field trip party drink with the village head and Lang-ge. Shen Wei, seeing Zhao Yunlan's growing bodily discomfort, snatches the drink from his hand under the guise of making a toast. After Shen Wei drinks, he falls unconscious. Zhao Yunlan puts him to bed with an IV, stares at him for a while, and then notices the stinky youchu blood smell on his jacket and does the math. The next morning, Shen Wei wakes to a note saying that Zhao Yunlan et al have returned to the city. We get the events of yesterday from Shen Wei's POV -- venturing out, killing youchu, and saving Zhao Yunlan in the caves -- and then Jiajia and Xiao-Quan come in to check on their professor.

Quote
The Envoy: They held tightly to the person dearest to their heart, not abandoning each other whether in life or death.

Detail
I always forget about Sang Zan's energy body being disbursed by Zhu Jiu, maybe because we don't see his reconstitution on screen. I think this second death and resurrection only further emphasises that death isn't a permanent, insurmountable obstacle in the world of the show. ♥

Questions
Do you have a stand-out favourite scene or quote from the first half of episode 11?

ZYL: If my loved one was killed by those people, killed by the system that I had built, it's very likely I'd hate these people more than I would hate the former tribe leader.
Envoy: That's right. Even if they're cut into a myriad of pieces, the hatred would be hard to dissolve.

Any theories about what personal experience these two are drawing on when they say this? (Neither of them seem driven by hatred to me.)

How did Da Qing know about energy beings? Do you think Wang Zheng is really sure the Envoy can save Sang Zan, or is it just desperation that drives her to her knees? Does Guo Changcheng feel worse about zapping Zhao Yunlan last episode or Chu Shuzhi in this episode? What does Zhao Yunlan think when he finds Zhu Hong asleep at the hotel and she reacts so strongly to Shen Wei's name? How perfect is the drinking scene? And the putting-to-bed scene? ♥ ♥ ♥ In the flashbacks, how did Shen Wei know Zhao Yunlan was in danger in the caves? Do you have any theories about the power in his note that repelled the youchu?

Did you see any parallels in these scenes with other parts of the drama? If you're familiar with the novel, any thoughts about how the drama adaptation compares, if at all?

(As usual, these are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in. We'd love to hear your thoughts!)

And here is our schedule -- if you can, please sign up to host a post!

Mike Bennett's Workshop

I've photographed his work a LOT over the past several years, and yesterday I saw him in the wild... or rather leaving his new workshop location. I wanted to repost some pictures of I've taken of his stuff over the years for context, but that's the downside to my main photography folder being 34,154 Files in 517 Folders. That's far from every photo I've ever taken, only select photos go in. I have spent time organizing it, but... not enough?

Anyway, you can get his vibe from these pics I think.

Where the magic happens:

He runs the sticker, keychain and pin exchanges across Portland. He did the Crypto-zoo, Dinotopia, The Portland Aquarium and runs the Wonderwood Springs D&D/RPG themed cafe in St Johns. I know I've posted about that place and can picture the images, but I cannot find them right now. I might need to start a dedicated Mike Bennett folder. Originally known online as Regional Memesmith, he is part of the fabric of the Portland arts scene.

Wait, remembering his old psued jogged a memory )

Weekly Reading

Recently Finished
Bury Me When I'm Dead
First in a new-to-me mystery series. The first line of the summary caught my interest right away: "Charlene 'Charlie' Mack runs one of the most respected private investigation firms in Detroit—not bad for a smart and savvy black woman struggling with her sexual orientation and a mother with early-onset Alzheimer's." But I just didn't love it. There are several more books in the series and I may check them out in the future, but I'm not racing to read the next one.

Pioneer Girl
Jumping off from the fact that Laura Ingalls Wilder's daughter Rose had at one point been a correspondant for Women's World in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, this then takes some liberties with her life to tell a story of a woman who is convinced the ceramic pin given to her grandfather in Vietnam by a woman reporter is the one mentioned in the Little House series, and she becomes obsessed with finding confirmation. I liked this, but not as much as I thought I would. I get that the author needs to make sure that readers get the Little House references but this overdid it, having in some places who chapters that are just retellings of the Little House books.

Mr. Lemoncello's Library Olympics
I enjoyed the first book in this series so when I saw the sequel pop up in a two for one Audible sale, I bought it. This one was okay but definitely felt less appealing to those not in the target age group, and I also didn't love the narrator.

A Girl Called Echo
Graphic novel about a Metis teen who finds herself traveling back in time to events being covered in her history class, eventually realizing that the people she's meeting during these trips are her ancestors. I liked this a lot. I know virtually nothing about Canadian history, so this was informative in that regard as well.

This Was Our Pact
Graphic novel about a group of friends who vow to follow the river to see where the lanterns end up after being released for the annual lantern festival. It starts off very normal and then suddenly there are talking bears and all sorts of whimsical things happening. I really liked this a lot.
