Dear Yuletide Writer 2020
Thank you in advance, kind stranger! I have requested some rather niche fandoms and I'm SO delighted by the possibility of any fic for any of these. I'm pretty easygoing & omnivorous when it comes to fic-reading, so please have fun writing, and follow your inspiration where it leads, even if it doesn't entirely match the prompts here!
This is my first Yuletide, so feel free to contact the Yuletide mods if you need more information on any of my prompts or DNWs.
In case you're stuck on the fandom we matched on: Dragon Shield has a very small canon, so you could pick it up quickly if you'd like! There's more details below, but tl;dr, just click through the lore section of their website and you know everything that I know :) The True Deceiver is a very short (approx. 50k words), very lovely novel; if you can get your hands on a copy it's a quick read. Finally, Sea of Fertility is a series of novels; however, the prompt I'm offering only covers the first novel, Spring Snow.
General Likes:
* gratuitous meta / worldbuilding, backstories, character studies, strong settings / setting-as-character
* working through bitterness / badfeels with family and friends (and other complicated relationships), (inverted) power dynamics (and exploration thereof), depictions of “home”, melancholy & reminiscing, people who are very different from each other struggling & striving & learning to understand each other
* people avoiding their feelings with various varieties of self-destructive behavior, scoundrel-y characters being scoundrels, smart characters being smart, heists
I mostly read gen, but I often enjoy very shippy or E-rated fic, so long as there's still significant plot and/or character study elements.
I mostly enjoy things that stick close to canon facts/settings. However, I do enjoy setting-based AUs when the new setting has a ton of flavor (e.g. coffee shop AUs or standard college AUs tend to be too bland for me, but I've enjoyed stuff like "they're all national park rangers" AU or "US Revolutionary War" AU, etc). Canon divergent AUs / "what if?" AUs are also great if you've got a cool idea for one!
What I've written, bookmarked, and been gifted on AO3 does a pretty good job of showing the range of things I'm most delighted to read.
DNWs: AUs where the primary focus is erotic (e.g. omegaverse, d/s verse, slavefic, etc), scat, emetophilia, ageplay/raceplay, mpreg, hanahaki disease, inflation
豊饒の海 - 三島由紀夫 | Houjou to Umi | Sea of Fertility Series - Mishima Yukio
Spring Snow is begging to be slashfic, is it not? I'd really love to see some shipfic with these two. I imagine it wouldn't be straightforward, since, let's be real, nothing's straightforward with Kiyoaki pre-Satoko; he's fussy and impossible and dreamy and impatient, but gosh it'd be fun reading. I'd like almost any flavor of this—angsty, experimental (I love how much Mishima plays with imagery in the book and that'd be neat to see in fic too), melancholy, just-one-time or over-one-long-summer, anything. (Probably not fluff, I guess; these two are not fluffy humans.)
If you're not interested in writing shippy content, I think their friendship on its own is incredibly beautiful and full of room to explore. How did they become friends in the first place? (They're so different that it sometimes staggers me that they're friensd at all. Was there an incident when they were very small that bonded them together? or more like, they've both been around each other so long they can't remember not being friends? etc.) If you've got a knack for history, exploring Japan's continuing modernization, or perhaps the contrast between Honda and Kiyoaki's high-society life with developments in the country at large, would be rad to explore.
The True Deceiver - Tove Jansson
I know the whole book is exploring the dynamic between Anna and Katri, but, I still want more :P
I'd be thrilled with femslash for this; edgy/dark femslash or some sort of AU setting that pushes it in that direction would be awesome. I can imagine twisting some canon knobs that could make Anna/Katri into some relationship/hookup-shaped thing, but of course it'd be messy and weird and hushed and some sort of weird thinly-veiled power struggle. (I'd be pleased with anything on the spectrum from "sloppy angry kiss after one of their arguments" to "sexy knifeplay after Mats has fallen asleep, because Katri is horny and angry and tired of Anna not listening to her about money, and Anna goes all bratty-sub and eggs her on," etc. So, go where your id leads, haha.)
If you're not interested in the shipping angle, there's plenty to else to explore about these two. Perhaps some more scenes once Anna's seemed to "catch on" to the effect Katri's having on her, or what it's like for Anna to (temporarily) lose her skill in art near the end.
Even a little post-novel scene may be a lovely strange coda to it all—is Anna able to paint again? does the dog ever come back? does Katri ever have enough money to be satisfied? (Actually, now that I'm typing it—maybe a scene where Katri's trying to "hear" the earth the way Anna does, or goes to chat with Anna while Anna's painting—gosh, that's on the sweeter/softer side than I'd usually like, but I think I'd like it here a lot.)
Mostly I loved the story's general focus on cold places and cold people (my initial review here!). Any fic with those two things will make me very happy.
Dragon Shield: Kingdoms (Book & Podcast & Card Game Sleeves)
So my total interaction with this canon is the back of the boxes of card game sleeves. You can see photos here, but tl;dr, whenever you buy a box of Dragon Shield card game sleeves, on the box there is (1) a picture of a kickass dragon, with (2) a name and (3) a cool little bio.
You can read all of the "back of the box" lore by clicking through each of the product pages listed here. I think Rubis, Rayalda, and Shinon look especially badass, but honestly, they all look cool.
I'd be delighted to see you just freewheel in this setting. Make up some stories with these dragons! Write about the weird cult that worships Shinon! Or have Shinon and Rubis get in an epic dragon duel! Whatever you get out of that little bit of flavor text, feel free to dream wildly!
I'll note that apparently Dragon Shield has recently released a novel and a podcast to accompany the lore on their card sleeve boxes. While you are certainly welcome to listen to / read these if they provide the inspiration you need, my only interaction with this universe has been on the boxes, so you're totally welcome to just read the dragon bios and make up stuff from there :)
(Final note: I'd prefer no explicit sexual content for this specific prompt, thanks.)
