With two books new to me, this just barely qualifies as books received. One SF, one fantasy and the SF novel is from a series.

Trump impact on EV industry and sales

As expected, Trump had it in for EVs as Battery Technology reports. Excerpts:
At a Glance

* Tariffs on EV components raised costs for manufacturers and slowed infrastructure development nationwide
* Federal EV tax credits terminated in September 2025 reducing consumer purchase incentives significantly
* NEVI charging program froze approvals delaying corridor fast-charging station deployment across states

Exactly one year ago today, Donald Trump was inaugurated as US President for the second time. One year on, it’s worth noting how his 2025 policy reset has reshaped the US EV landscape. Tariffs lifted costs across vehicles, batteries, and charging hardware. Federal infrastructure momentum stalled. Regulatory drivers that encouraged EV adoption were weakened. And incentives that helped close price gaps for consumers and fleets were curtailed or timed out.

In aggregate, these moves narrowed near‑term competitiveness for domestic EV makers as Chinese OEMs continued scaling volumes and cutting costs abroad—pressuring US incumbents at precisely the moment the global market is accelerating.

Here is the timeline of eleven specific government actions undertaken last year that worked against the interests of EV developers and customers.

1. January 20, 2025: Day‑One executive order reorients energy and EV policy
2. February 6–7, 2025: FHWA freezes NEVI plan approvals and new obligations
3. Early March 2025: Federal fleet retreat from EVs; charger deactivations
4. April 2, 2025 (effective April 5): Global “reciprocal” tariff regime
5. April 18, 2025 (effective May 19): FHWA repeals highway GHG performance measure
6. June 11, 2025: NHTSA “resets” CAFE, excluding EVs and credit trading
7. June 12, 2025: CRA resolutions target California’s EPA waivers
8. July 4, 2025: “One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act” curtails EV credits; removes CAFE penalties
9. July 30, 2025 (effective August 29): De minimis duty‑free entry suspended
10. August 1, 2025 — EPA Proposes to Rescind the Endangerment Finding and Tailpipe GHG Standards
11. December 5, 2025 — NHTSA Proposes SAFE Rule III, Weakening Light‑Duty CAFE and Ending Credit Trading

2026: The rest of the world moves forward as US automakers navigate constraints

The 2025 data paint a clear gap: EVs were roughly 11% of U.S. new‑car sales versus nearly one in four across Europe (EU BEV share 16.9% year‑to‑date by November) and about 60% in China—evidence that mainstream adoption is advancing faster abroad. Charging infrastructure tells the same story: China added hundreds of thousands of public fast chargers in 2024–2025, lifting public charging capacity per EV above 3 kW, while the US reached only about 65,000 DC fast‑charging ports by November 2025. And mature markets such as Norway are already near‑fully electric—95.9% of new‑car sales in 2025—underscoring how much ground the US must make up.

And just this week, Canada signed a strategic agreement with China that opens the door to higher-range, lower‑cost Chinese‑made EVs entering the Canadian market under a 6.1% MFN tariff, with an initial quota of 49,000 vehicles and an affordability target that reserves half of the quota for EVs priced under CAD $35,000 by 2030. This development increases competitive pressure at America’s doorstep.

The race for EV market share was never going to be easy for US automakers. It’s too bad the federal actions of 2025 make it even harder for them to keep pace.

The Dreamer by Dulcie Deamer

The wave yearns at the cliff foot: its pale arms
        Reach upward and relapse, like down-dropped hands;
The baffled tides slip backward evermore,
And a long sighing murmurs round the sands . . .

My heart is as the wave that lifts and falls:
Tall is the cliff—oh! tall as that dim star
That crowns its summit hidden in a cloud—
Tall as the dark and holy heavens are.

The sad strange wreckage of full many ships
Burdens the bitter waters’ ebb and flow:
Gold diadems, like slowly falling flames,
        Lighten the restless emerald gulfs below;

And withered blossoms float, and silken webs,
And pallid faces framed in wide-spread hair,
And bubble-globes that seethe with peacock hues,
And jewelled hands, half-open, cold and fair.

Sea creatures move beneath: their swift sleek touch
Begets sweet madness and unworthy fire—
Scaled women—triton-things, whose dark seal eyes
Are hot and bloodshot with a man’s desire.

Their strange arms clasp: the sea-pulse in their veins
Beats like the surf of the immortal sea—
Strong, glad and soulless: elemental joys
Bathe with green flame the sinking soul of me.

Downward and down—to passionate purple looms,
Athrill with thought-free, blurred, insatiate life,
Where the slow-throbbing sea-flow sways like weed
Dim figures blended in an amorous strife—

I am enclasped, I sink; but the wave lifts,
With all its freight of treasure and of death,
In sullen foamless yearning towards the height
        Where the star burns above the vapour-wreath;

And a deep sob goes up, and all the caves
Are filled with mourning and a sorrow-sound.
The green fire fades: I rise: I see the star—
Gone are the triton arms that clipped me round.

Hope beats like some lost bird against the cliff—
The granite cliff above the burdened wave,
Whose fleeting riches are more desolate
        Than gems dust-mingled in a nameless grave . . .

When all the wordless thirsts of Time are slaked,
And all Earth’s yearning hungers sweetly fed,
And the Sea’s grief is stilled, and the Wind’s cry,
And Day and Night clasp on one glowing bed—

Oh! in that hour shall clay and flame be blent—
Love find its perfect lover, breast on breast—
When dream and dreamer at the last are one,
And joy is folded in the arms of jest.

(no subject)

BIG NEWS in the life of the exceptionally slow writer: I have finally gotten these two eejits not only off the damn (not actually a) cliff but also off the gletscher at the bottom and down to their actual destination. Do they have a clue between them yet? Well, yes, but they're putting them together into two different completely wrong puzzles.

The fire, being Guae's fire, has burned neither too high nor too low in their absence; it's implausibly cosy for a one-room hut with a bare earth floor and no furniture to speak of. Guae waves off his attempts to be useful; bundles him up in both the drying-blankets, stirs the pot, turns the arm so it's a bit further off the fire, and then comes back to start - well. Fussing. It's definitely fussing; he stops three times while unbraiding Hanno's hair to make sure that his fingers and toes are warming up properly; brings him a bowl of dried currants and sugared orange-peel, and a cup of - oh, it's grape-wine, from those sour little grapes they used to grow on the back-slopes behind Nivun, dry and sharp and strong enough that it's a good thing he's watered it well, and they lost the vines to the hell-white and nowhere outside the plateau ever made anything quite like it.

Guae kindly doesn't draw attention to Hanno dabbing his eyes with the corner of one of the blankets, just turns him a little and starts very gently combing out and drying his hair. It's -

It's. He doesn't know.

It's not that it's not nice, to be - cared for, like this - he doesn't object to Guae's attention, or even to Vero so thoughtfully enabling it, it's just -

(- not for him.)

- disconcerting.

I don't know if said this before? But I realised a while ago that a lot of Hanno's dodgy self-esteem / conviction that he's not good enough & needs to try harder goes back to the fact that for most of his adolescence, he's effectively quite a bit younger than anyone thinks.

developmental waffle )

Anyway what's 'funny' is:
- so Hanno's like 11 years younger than Guaeth, which seems like a lot but by the start of the time-loop they're 75 and 64 and that's basically mid-20s.
- and Hanno did a whole extra time-loop before coming back, coming home so experience-wise he's older right?
- except now here I am needing to know a bit more detail about loop 1 and when I started mapping it out... it only amounts to about 24 years, while Guaeth lived another 55 years after Hanno's death in the original timeline...
Yep, I also thought Hanno was older than he is... :D (Not that it makes any difference at this point, but still, it amused me.)

Cowboy Mashed Potatoes

Cowboy Mashed Potatoes
Total Time: 45 mins Servings: 8

Ingredients

2 lbs. Yukon gold or russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
1 1/4 tsp. salt
2 cups frozen fire-roasted whole kernel corn
4 strips bacon
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 fresh jalapeño, seeds removed and diced (1/4 cup)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup butter, cut into pieces and softened
1/4 to 1/2 cup sour cream
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/4 cup sliced green onions

Directions

In a 5 to 6 qt. Dutch oven, add potatoes, 1 teaspoon salt and enough water to cover. Bring to boiling, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer 12 to 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. Add frozen corn and cook for 2 minutes to heat through. Drain potatoes and corn, return to Dutch oven.
Meanwhile in a medium skillet over medium heat, cook bacon, flipping halfway, 7 to 8 minutes, or until crisp. Remove bacon from skillet with tongs and set aside on a paper towel lined plate, reserving bacon fat in skillet. Add onion, jalapeño and garlic. Cook and stir until tender and onions just begin to brown, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
Add onion mixture, butter and 1/4 cup sour cream to the potato mixture. Mash with a potato masher until desired consistency (it should still be chunky.) Stir in cheese, remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and black pepper. Add more sour cream, if desired. Transfer to a serving dish. Crumble cooked bacon overtop and sprinkle with green onions.

Writing, writing, writing

There was the story I was planning to write, and then there was the much more out there (and potentially much longer) story idea that came up in conversation with a friend last night - when I foolishly said: "I could write that."

Guess which one I've now got 1500 words of?

*sigh*

The word "fuck" has been coming up in my online conversations quite a bit today, mostly coupled with "you". She's an utter menace.

Finally got around to framing my black cat cross stitch.  The photo does show the tiny beads sewn on some of the diamonds (not shown the rude words used when attaching beads!).  I was very pleased with the result.

Day 7 Theme - The Lover

Today's theme is The Lover.

Here are some ideas to get you started: She is the type of person that people want to be around. She has a passion for life and wants to connect with others. How does she express this love? What is her love language? Or conversely, is love something that she shies away from?

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

Want to get a jump start on tomorrow's theme? Check out the prompt list in the pinned post at the top of the page. Please don't post until that day.

Oh man, I didn't mean to let almost a whole month go by between posts. To be fair, it's been a busy month. I'm even struggling to keep my physical journal updated, since whole days go by without me even sitting down at my desk!

The course I've been attending is almost over. Monday will be our last day together. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.
On one hand, there have been times when I've felt immensely out of place, and interacting with the people there always meant I needed to put up a mask of sorts. On the other, we've been together for almost three months. They're not bad people in any way, and we've shared some really emotional moments. I think I'm gonna miss them, but we're all such different people, in such different places in our lives, that I don't think we're gonna keep in touch all that much.
We're also all pretty exhausted by the rhythm of the course, so I do look forward to being able to relax a little... but I have to admit that having that kind of structure forced on me makes me function better. From Tuesday on, I'm gonna have to come up with my own specific structure, as I'm gonna have to start studying for something. I hope I can do it.

Since the start of the year, we've spent almost all mornings during the weekend at my aunt's place. My grandma moved there a few weeks ago. Well, "moved" isn't exactly the right word, but she's there now. Which means that it almost feels like a normal family reunion when we're all there, although (thank fuck) a few relatives are missing. It's insane how chill those occasions can be if you just take some people out of the picture.
