Was talking with a friend about the relative difficulty I have with writing various characters, and realized, hey, this could be an fe-bruary post.

So, ranked from easiest to hardest, this is how difficult I've found it to write various characters. Note that doesn't imply that any of these characters are the easiest or hardest to write in general (my writing experience may be very different from anyone else's), and in some of these cases it may simply be I wrote a character in a particularly easy scenario (i.e. writing Nailah doing stereotypical badass things is likely much easier than other, more nuanced takes on Nailah). Also it certainly doesn't mean anything like "which characters I write best" or whatever—this is more about how hard the experience of writing them is, regardless of how well or poorly they ultimately turn out (and some of these have turned out badly indeed).

So yeah, the list:

( list all the things! )

comments

so I haven't figured out how to turn it into a fic yet

but I do have a vague headcanon about Ranulf having spent a substantial amount of time in one of the beorc nations (probably Crimea or Begnion) as some sort of undercover agent/spy

because like, Ranulf always seems far more perceptive of differences between beorc and laguz cultures than literally anyone else, and is always explaining those differences to everyone

and I also sort of think this may be where he gets a lot of his temperance/rationality/strategic thought—most of the other beast laguz we meet have either a shallow understanding of beorc culture or are just super-aggressive toward them—and there's that weird-ass thing we're given that laguz have a very hard time just abandoning a fight, even if that fight is strategically dumb, something which Ranulf tells us about but which he, himself, doesn't seem to be very affected by.

I mean part of this could obviously be just that he is a Naturally Cunning and Cautious Dude, but I like to imagine that the depth of his knowledge/experience/expertise comes from experience with beorc

and yeah something something interesting tensions between his obvious political savvy placed against Skrimir's bullheadedness and such.

comments

Hey here's a list of characters and ships I'm particularly fond of, because I'm pretty sure I've never put something like this together, and because fe-bruary and yeah. (Note: this changes basically all the time.)

Characters
FE8: Lute, L'Arachel, Rennac, Joshua, Forde, Innes, Neimi
FE9/10: Zihark, Volug, Marcia, Soren, Shinon, Kieran, Geoffrey, Nailah, Leonardo, Micaiah

Ships
FE8: Franz/Amelia, L'Arachel/literally anyone (esp.
So after the little stunt Naesala pulls in FE10, Tibarn makes it clear in no uncertain terms that he fully intends to get revenge:
Naesala: Now, now, Tibarn. I know you're angry, but we'll work it out when this is over.
Tibarn: Not a chance, Naesala. I hope you've said all your prayers and farewells. After I break every bone in your body, I'm going to rip your wings off and feed them to you before you get to die.
[...]
Tibarn: Hmph...fine. You get to live now, Naesala. Once this is done, though, you're a corpse.
And that's not just a throwaway scene. Tibarn repeats this threat a bit later (something "I'll be wearing your beak as a trophy" something, man I love his colorful threats).

But then come the end of the game, Naesala's alive and well and diplomat-ing it up. I have zero doubt that Tibarn was fully intending to kill him, and I've got a few theories on what made him change his mind, with various levels of plausibility and interesting-ness:

( Birdies birdies everywhere )

comments

aka: "is there a military historian in the house?"

So there's this throwaway line in FE10 when the laguz alliance + Ike's bros are about to attack Daein at Fort Nox:
Ranulf: Ten thousand? They aren't really going to try and fight us with only ten thousand men, are they?
