I think like most people, when I first watched Firefly I was like, "okay so this is a live-action Bebop." Which means I knew it would be cool from the start. And while it may seem that way at first, yeah... they're not alike at all.
It never even occurred to me to consider Bebop fic, partially because I don't know the world well enough but also because I feel it doesn't need it. You basically hit on that. As opposed to Firefly, because holy wow unfinished business. Serenity was a valiant effort, but alas.
I've been meaning to watch Bebop again, because I didn't quite grasp its beauty the first time. It wasn't until I had finished it that I was like... wow, I missed a lot. And it is in the subtleties. They're not slapstick-humor depressed, but there is definitely a brokenness to all of them that you don't pick up right away. And that's what makes it more genuine.
